This memorandum is to notify districts that they are eligible to have certain electronic products recycled at no charge.
The new E-Cycle Washington program makes it possible for you to responsibly recycle your unwanted computers, monitors, laptops and televisions at no charge. As of January 1, 2009, electronic manufacturers selling in Washington State are required to provide this service for free to households, school districts, small businesses, small governments, charities, and special purpose districts.
The program does not cover peripherals such as mice, printers, copiers, scanners, or other electrical devices such as cell phones. For information about this program, go to www.ecyclewashington.org.
Recycling locations for small quantities (10 or fewer units) can be found at https://fortress.wa.gov/ecy/recycle/. Large quantities need to be transported to a processor registered with the E-Cycle Washington program. At this time, the Washington Materials Management & Financing Authority (WMMFA) is the manufacturer-funded group leading this effort. Please contact them for assistance in reducing your cost when eliminating unwanted electronics, or with help arranging transportation (at district expense) to processors.
